Johann Schwenn (* 1947 ) is a German criminal defense attorney .

Life

Johann Schwenn grew up in Hamburg-Blankenese , the son of a law professor and a district judge . He studied law at the Universities of Lyon , Tübingen and Hamburg . In 1977 he settled in Hamburg as a lawyer and criminal defense attorney. He has acted as defense counsel or joint plaintiff for numerous prominent clients . His clients included people from contemporary history such as Markus Wolf , Marion Gräfin Dönhoff , Karl Koch , Peter-Jürgen Boock , Wolf Biermann , Gregor Gysi , Jan Philipp Reemtsma , Jan Ullrich , Thomas Springstein and the former VW works council chairman Klaus Volkert .

From 2009 to 2010 Schwenn worked as the defender of Ralf Witte , who was wrongly convicted of rape, to clear up a miscarriage of justice . Witte contacted the TV weather presenter Jörg Kachelmann , who was also accused of alleged rape, by email and recommended Schwenn as his defense lawyer. Kachelmann changed his defense attorney on this recommendation, so that Schwenn defended him from the end of November 2010 to May 2011 before the Mannheim Regional Court in the Kachelmann trial , after he had previously commented on this trial in a journalistic way. He replaced the lawyers Reinhard Birkenstock and Klaus Schroth . The trial against Kachelmann ended on May 31, 2011 with an acquittal , the judgment is final .

Schwenn is considered a particularly contentious defense attorney and has also made a name for himself through retrial . Among other things, he was able to reapply in the case of Adolf S. and Bernhard M.

In June 2020 it was announced that Schwenn had taken on the defense of the suspect in the missing Madeleine McCann case .
