Johann Stephan Decker (French Jean Étienne Decker, born December 26, 1783 in Colmar , † June 25, 1844 in Grinzing ) was an Austrian portrait painter and lithographer.

Life

Decker studied from 1804 in Paris with Jacques Louis David and Jean-Jacques Karpff and initially occupied himself with history painting, but switched to portrait painting. After completing his studies, he returned to Colmar in 1811. At the invitation of Hungarian officers from the headquarters of the Allied Powers in Colmar, he went to Pest in 1818 , where he painted many portraits. In 1821 he came to Vienna . There he worked for Prince Klemens Wenzel Lothar von Metternich and other nobles. From 1827 to 1840 Decker was a drawing teacher with Archduke Karl von Österreich-Teschen , whose daughter, later Maria Theresa of Austria (1816–1867), he taught.

Johann Stephan Decker created portraits as miniatures and lithographs, later also genre and landscape pictures. In 1826 he painted the last representative portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven .

Decker was the father and teacher of the portrait painters Albert Decker (1817–1871), Gabriel Decker (1821–1855) and Georg Decker (1818–1894).
