Johann Wilhelm Edler von Hildebrand (* 1709 , Mark Brandenburg , Holy Roman Empire ; † November 6, 1773 in Freidorf , Austria-Hungary ) was the impopulation director and administrative councilor of the provincial administration of the Temescher Banat .

Live and act

Johann Wilhelm Hildebrand came to Timisoara in 1764 as an administrative councilor of the Temescher Banat . He held this position until 1773. From 1765 to 1768 he was entrusted with the settlement of German families from the Reich as the impopulation director.

During his tenure, the following villages were founded in the Banat :

Hildebrand had developed a system for the establishment of new villages in the Banat. The basis of the system was the wasteland settlement through the creation of large villages. These large settlements could be built within one to two years, as only cheap, quickly tamped mud houses were made available, which were only covered with reed. This settlement method was suitable for accommodating a large number of colonists, as the construction of the places took relatively little time. One advantage of this system was that the colonists' debt burden was kept within tolerable limits due to the cheap construction. For the same reason Hildebrand introduced a community economy for the beginning . That meant that the colonists were fed together, built their houses together and tilled the fields of the village boundary together. Hildebrand used colonist overseers to ensure the consistent implementation of this common economy. Hildebrand had presented his system to the Ministerial Banco Court Deputation on October 14, 1766 . In it he assured that he was able to use his method to settle around 2,200 colonist families on the Banater Heide per year.

In 1768 he was removed from office. Brandenburg and Plasch continued its activity. Carl Samuel Neumann Edler von Buchholt , Josef Franz Knoll and Johann Andreas Laff were designated as executive staff . In 1771 he got his position again. Theresian impopulation ended with his death .
