Johann Wilhelm Kals

Johann Wilhelm Kals (born October 11, 1700 in Düren , † February 21, 1781 buried in Maastricht ) was a Reformed theologian .

Life

Kals grew up as the son of a family belonging to the Reformed church in Düren. The Protestants were only a small minority in Düren, which was shaped by Catholicism. Since the Reformed did not have their own grammar school, Kals attended the grammar school run by Jesuits . From 1722 to 1728 he studied theology in Utrecht .

In 1731 he and his wife Anna Twisker moved to Suriname , then a Dutch colony . There he worked as a preacher for the Dutch Reformed Trade Church. Following the example of St. He wanted to do missionary work there , i.e. convert the Gentiles to Christianity . In Suriname he also campaigned against slavery . After two years he was sent back to the Netherlands .

There he served in Stevensweert from 1731 to 1740 . He studied oriental languages with Albertus Schultens in Leiden . He continued his studies at Oxford . There he was also a lecturer at times . In 1753 he was in Bremen , where he published two Hebrew study books.

Since he could not find a permanent position in Germany, he emigrated to North America , namely to Pennsylvania . From 1758 he worked there as a preacher for the German emigrants . He then worked in Amwell, New York, Reading and Germantown. At times he also worked as a Hebrew teacher. In 1774 he returned to Amsterdam . A year later he visited his hometown Düren, but continued to live in the Netherlands.
