Johann von Zwehl
Johann Bertold Alexander von Zwehl (born July 27, 1851 in Osterode am Harz , † May 28, 1926 in Berlin ) was a Prussian infantry general and governor of Antwerp from 1916 to 1918 during the First World War .
Life
origin
Johann was the eldest son of the Prussian chief controller Oskar von Zwehl (1818–1890) and his first wife Elisabeth, née Lauprecht (1829–1860).
Military career
Zwehl joined the 3rd Pomeranian Infantry Regiment No. 14 of the Prussian Army as an ensign on August 2, 1870 and took part in the war against France in 1870/71 . For his achievements he received both classes of the Iron Cross .
From May 22, 1900, Zwehl was in command of the Fusilier Regiment “General-Field Marshal Prince Albrecht of Prussia” (Hannoversches) No. 73 in Hanover . After two years he was commissioned from May 17, initially with the command of the 30th Infantry Brigade in Koblenz and finally appointed to the brigade commander on June 19, 1902 , while being promoted to major general . This was followed by promotion to lieutenant general on September 4, 1906, and he was appointed commander of the 13th division in Münster . Zwehl held this position until he was recalled on July 26, 1908. He was then transferred to the army officers and put up for disposal on September 9, 1909 .
With the mobilization at the outbreak of the First World War, Zwehl was reactivated and commanding general of the VII Reserve Corps . Zwehl was the fourth person to be awarded the Pour le Mérite order for conquering the Maubeuge fortress . From December 17, 1916 until the end of the war he was governor of Antwerp. Zwehl received on October 17, 1917 the oak leaves for the order Pour le Mérite. On November 25, 1918, his mobilization provision was lifted and Zwehl finally adopted into retirement.
Since 1912 Zwehl was a member of the lawless society in Berlin .
family
Zwehl married Ida Reissert (* 1861) on August 12, 1882 in Königsberg . The later lawyer and playwright Hans Fritz von Zwehl emerged from the marriage.
