Johanna Maier

Johanna Maier (born August 23, 1951 in Radstadt , Land Salzburg ) is an Austrian cook . She is the first and so far only female chef to be awarded four toques by the Gault-Millau restaurant guide and two stars by the Michelin guide .

Career

Johanna's father was a bricklayer, her mother ran a small laundry. Johanna completed an apprenticeship as a cook and waiter in the sports hotel in her home town of Radstadt. In 1968, at an apprentice competition in Salzburg , she met her future husband, the military man Dietmar Maier from Filzmoos . Johanna and Dietmar Maier went to Paris together in 1969 . Johanna initially worked as an au pair , Dietmar as an intern in a restaurant. In 1971 both returned to Austria. The first child (Simone) was born, Johanna and Dietmar Maier married civilly and after the birth of the second child (Tobias) in 1973 in church. They moved to the Hubertus inn in Filzmoos, which Dietmar's parents ran. Dietmar and his mother ran the kitchen, Johanna took care of the service and the guest rooms. In 1983 their third child, Didi Maier, was born. When Johanna's mother-in-law died in 1984, Johanna took over the kitchen. After their first successful season, the couple celebrated with a fine meal with the Obauer brothers in Werfen . This became a key experience for Johanna Maier. She attended a multi-day cooking seminar with Dieter Müller in Bischofshofen , visited Hans Haas in Munich , André Jaeger in Schaffhausen and Jean-Georges Vongerichten in New York and got ideas from the Regent in Hong Kong . In 1987, the year her fourth child (Johannes) was born, she was awarded the first toque by Gault-Millau .
