The St. John the Baptist Church with maypole in Wettbergen

The St. John the Baptist Church in Hanover is the listed church of the Evangelical Lutheran parish in the Hanover district of Wettbergen at the address An der Kirche .

history

The coat of arms of the Volger family dated 1697 above the church portal

A church dedicated to John the Baptist in the old village center of Wettbergen was first mentioned in 1477. However, it burned down in 1580 and was apparently only rebuilt at the end of the 17th century: "Two coat of arms stones with the dates 1697 and 1702" above the west door "probably [...] point to the time of the rebuilding". The older coat of arms shows that of the Hanoverian council family Volger .

Pastor-Bartels-Weg with a legend about Pastor Friedrich Bartels

According to a legend board on Pastor-Bartels-Weg , Friedrich Bartels was pastor in Wettbergen, from the year of the end of National Socialism and the Second World War from 1945 to 1953.

In 1998 Pastor Bert Schwarz was honored by the Friends of Hanover for his voluntary work, especially for the Giovanni Children's Circus .

Description of construction and location

The chapel is located a little away from the historic town center on a narrow side path: “The steep slope at this point was compensated for by an embankment bordered by an embankment wall”. The church is an east-west facing simply plastered building made of rubble stones with corner blocks and "strong, inclined support pillars". In the east, the small hall building is closed on three sides, while in the west an octagonal turret with a curved hood crowns the ridge.

The neighboring rectory at An der Kirche 23 is a two-story half - timbered building from the mid-19th century. The cubic structure, closed with a hipped roof, has a five-axis main facade facing the small side path, but was "unfortunately [...] covered with asbestos cement except for the east side ".

To the south, the elongated, presumably former parish barn borders on Church 25 , the hall gate of which on the north side still indicates its former use. The half-timbered building stands on a quarry stone base that has been adapted to the course of the terrain and which, in terms of urban planning, decisively shapes the southern course of the street An der Kirche .

Historically, the narrower circle of church buildings and the neighboring manor house also includes another farm building: The half-timbered barn at Church 13 shows the year 1839 on the gate beam of the side hallway . Just like the rectory and the parish barn, this wall stand construction is filled with bricks.
