Johannes Busch (Evangelist)

Johannes Busch (born March 11, 1905 in Elberfeld , † April 14, 1956 in Witten ) was a German Protestant pastor, evangelist , federal warden of the West German Young Men Association and author.

Life

Born eight years after his better-known brother Wilhelm Busch , Johannes grew up in Frankfurt am Main . His youngest brother Friedrich ("Fritz") Busch also studied Protestant theologian. About his parents, Pastor Dr. Wilhelm Busch in Elberfeld and Johanna Busch, b. Kullen from Hülben , he was shaped religiously, influenced by the Rhenish and Swabian Pietism . In 1924 he graduated from high school and went to study theology in Bielefeld-Bethel , Tübingen , Basel and Münster . His most influential professors were Karl Barth and Adolf Schlatter .

At the age of 25, Johannes Busch began serving as a parish priest in Witten an der Ruhr in 1930 . In 1934 he was removed from office by the German Christians and was banned from church. As a result, he preached the gospel of Jesus Christ in the church forecourt and in a pub hall. He was arrested several times by the State Secret Police , but released again. In the same year he was appointed Federal Warden of the West German Young Men Association, where he worked until his death in 1956. He was also an active member of the Confessing Church of Germany.

In 1940 Johannes Busch was drafted as a soldier and served as a regimental adjutant in a motor vehicle unit and as an informal pastor in the Caucasus . At the end of the war he was first taken prisoner by the Russians and later by the British . After his return he became a state youth pastor and synodal of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia and imperial evangelist and imperial pastor of the CVJM- Westbund. He was a speaker at many evangelism events for young people and also brought out the Christian youth magazine Jugend unter dem Wort . He attended the YMCA World Youth Conference in Oslo in 1947 and the YMCA World Federation meetings, where his voice questioned and his words had weight.

Johannes Busch died in Witten at the age of 51 as a result of serious injuries in a traffic accident caused by a drunk driver. 10,000 people attended his funeral service in Witten.

Johannes was married to Grete, who died in 1951. They had four sons and two daughters; one son is the theologian Eberhard Busch .
