Johannes Holthusen's epitaph in Lübeck Cathedral

Johannes Holthusen (* in Münster ; † February 12, 1586 in Lübeck ) was a German Roman Catholic clergyman and dean at Lübeck Cathedral .

Life

Johannes Holthusen came from a wealthy family in Münster. As a master's degree he went to Rome , where he worked as an auditor at the Rota Romana and was appointed papal Count Palatine .

In 1547 he received the Lübeck prebend from Hinrich Brandes, who died in Spain. From 1550 until his death he resided in Lübeck. He became Cantor and Canonicus Senior of the Lübeck Cathedral Chapter . On October 27, 1570, the chapter elected him with a narrow majority to succeed Andreas Angerstein as dean of the cathedral. Like Angerstein, Holthusen was opposed to the Reformation , but he could not get his way by obliging the cathedral chapter to comply with the decisions of the Council of Trent . After the (Protestant) Bishop Eberhard von Holle and his companion in the house of the dean had committed a “gross imprecise” at Christmas 1571, there was a trial before the Imperial Court of Justice between the bishop and the chapter to delimit their rights and powers. The process ended in 1575 with a settlement that also stipulated that the oath on the Tridentinum could not be enforced.

In 1574 Holthusen bought his cook and concubine Anne a house in Lübeck on Leibgeding . In his will of 1585 he paid tribute to his cook Margrete Pohlmann and bequeathed her son Berend Pohlmann his books, armor and skewers.

Already in 1574 he settled in Lübeck Cathedral an epitaph from sandstone set. It shows a relief of the resurrection of Christ in a Renaissance niche, crowned by his coat of arms. Below is a Latin inscription of six distiches . The epitaph is embedded in the north side of the second south nave pillar and has been preserved (without the painting and gilding, which was renewed in 1888).
