from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes Niederer (born January 1, 1779 in Lutzenberg AR ; † December 2, 1843 in Geneva ; legal resident in Lutzenberg) was an Evangelical Reformed Swiss pastor , educator and philosopher from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .

Life

Johannes Niederer was the son of Hans Jakob Niederer, carpenter , and Katharina Jacob. In 1814 he married Rosette Kasthofer .

Niederer first attended the village school in Lutzenberg and also took additional language lessons in Wolfhalden . He studied theology in Basel from 1794 to 1796 . Niederer worked as pastor from 1798 to 1800 in Bühler and from 1800 to 1803 in Sennwald . After previous encounters and several years of correspondence, he joined Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi in 1803 . From then on Niederer worked for fourteen years in Pestalozzi's institutes in Burgdorf , Münchenbuchsee and Yverdon . He mediated and defended the concerns of his master, whose disciple he saw himself. During this time, numerous publications were created that brought Niederer recognition in the Pestalozzi circle and in German-speaking countries. In 1813 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Tübingen and in 1815 from the University of Gießen . Persistent conflicts and differing views on questions relating to the institute's management led to Pestalozzi and Niederer separating in 1817. Niederer then moved to his wife's daughter institute, which moved from Yverdon to Geneva in 1838 . He led several years of trial against Pestalozzi and his colleague Joseph Schmid.

Niederer was already considered Pestalozzi's most important employee and student during his lifetime. He justified its socio-political views and pedagogical innovations philosophically and asserted them against criticism. A number of books and pamphlets prove his technical and linguistic fluency.
