Johannes Roth (politician)

John Roth (* 6. March 1812 in depths ; † 27. December 1870 ibid ; heimatberechtigt in Teufen) one was Swiss mayor , member and president of the Small Council , Landammann , Tagsatzung Minister , the Council of States and the National Council of the canton of Appenzell Outer Rhodes .

Life

John Roth was a son of Daniel Roth, farmer , textile fabrikant and textile merchant and councilor, and Elsbeth Zuberbühler. He was a brother-in-law of Johann Georg Nef . In 1834 he married Emilie Schiess, daughter of Johannes Schiess . From 1824 to 1826 he attended a private institute in Hemberg and from 1826 to 1829 in St. Gallen . From 1829 to 1832 he was at the Collegium Humanatis in Zurich . From 1832 to 1834 he studied law in Berlin . From 1837 to 1839 he served as councilor and district administrator. From 1839 to 1843 he presided over the small council. From 1843 to 1844 and from 1845 to 1848 he was parish captain and district administrator. From 1844 to 1870 he was president of the cantonal interrogation office. From 1844 to 1845 he held the post of governor of Ausserrhoder. After a visit from Johann Caspar Bluntschli , he was wrongly decried as a Jesuit and voted out of office. From 1848 to 1853 he officiated as state cap master and from 1853 to 1860 as state governor. From 1860 to 1870 he held the office of Landammann. In 1848 he was a delegate to the Diet. From 1849 to 1859 and from 1868 to 1870 he served as a free-spirited Council of States . From 1859 to 1866 he sat on the National Council . Roth made large contributions to public buildings in Teufen and promoted music . In 1862 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Zurich .
