He was the personal physician of King Siegismund I of Poland and canon in Glogau , Warmia , Vilnius , Warsaw , Breslau , Sandomir and Krakow .

Life

Johannes Solfa was born in Triebel in Niederlausitz as the son of Benedikt Solfa. In 1506 he enrolled at the University of Cracow and obtained his baccalaureus degree in the same year . In 1512 he was awarded a master's degree and then held lectures on philosophical subjects.

In 1513 Johannes Solfa went to Italy to study medicine ( Bologna or Padua  ?). In 1516 he practiced in Bologna as a doctor of medicine , in 1518 in Rome at the Heilig-Geist-Spital. In 1519 he stayed briefly in Venice , where he published a medical book.

At the end of this year Johannes Solfa returned to Krakow, where he has worked as a doctor ever since. He became a monk and was mentioned in 1521 as Canon of Glogau . In 1522 he became the personal physician of King Siegismund I of Poland in Krakow. In 1526 he was given a canon position in Warmia , where he maintained contact with Duke Albrecht of Prussia. In 1528 Solfa became canon in Vilnius and Warsaw , in 1529 in Sandomir and in 1539 in Breslau .

In 1541 Johannes Benedict was raised to the nobility by Emperor Charles V. In 1546 he became the praepositus of the cathedral chapter in Warmia, in 1547 dean of the cathedral chapter in Wroclaw and finally, after many years of efforts, also canon in Krakow. After the death of King Siegismund I in 1548, Johannes Solfa retained his title as royal personal physician and an annual pension, but was no longer active at the court.

In the last years of his life he turned to theological subjects and probably died on March 30, 1564 in Krakow. He is buried in the cathedral on the Wawel .

Johannes Benedikt Solfa was an important scholar of his time who published new findings, especially in the field of anatomy and physiology. He was known to Johannes Dantiscus , Andreas Cricius , Johann Boner , probably Nicolaus Copernicus and other personalities of his time.
