Johannes Ulrich Bavier (born January 17, 1669 in Chur ; † April 1749 ibid) was a Reformed pastor from Switzerland.

Life

Johannes Ulrich Bavier was born into an old, respected family in Chur in the Swiss canton of Graubünden . In 1688/1689 he studied at the University of Basel , in 1689 at the Academy in Geneva and in 1690 at the Dutch Academy in Franeker . In the same year he was accepted into the Evangelical-Rhaetian Synod in Ilanz , which allowed him to work as a pastor in the three leagues . Bavier decided, however, to work as a field preacher in the Dutch Capol regiment . In 1692 he returned and became pastor in Trimmis in the Graubünden Rhine Valley. In 1700 he was elected as pastor in Malix .

In 1707 he moved to the Regulakirche in his hometown of Chur, where he stayed for over twenty years. In 1728 he became pastor and antistes at St. Martin's Church in Chur. Two years later he was appointed Dean of the Church of Gods Association. Because his voice became weaker with age, he retired to his estate in Masans (now Chur) after twelve years. Bavier was in contact with pietism , but without clearly acknowledging it. This enabled him to take on a mediating position in the synod. Johannes Ulrich Bavier died in Masans in April 1749.
