The Johannesturm

The Johanneskirche was a church in the old town of Erfurt . The names of Johannesstraße , Johannesvorstadt and Johannesplatz are derived from it. Today only its tower, the Johannesturm , is preserved.

history

The Johanneskirche was first mentioned in a document in 1131. The last building, which also includes the tower that exists today, was built between 1469 and 1486 in the Gothic style. With the introduction of the Reformation in 1525, the use of the church as a house of prayer ended. Various other uses followed before the church was demolished between 1817 and 1819.

The Johannesturm now serves as a bell tower for the neighboring Augustinian monastery .
