John Anthony King Mussio

John Anthony King Mussio (born June 13, 1902 in Cincinnati , Ohio , USA , † April 15, 1978 ) was the first bishop of Steubenville .

Life

John Anthony King Mussio grew up in Cincinnati, where he graduated from Xavier University, Ohio in 1924 with a bachelor's degree. He continued his studies at Notre Dame University , where he obtained his master's degree . He also studied music at the Cincinnati Conservatory. From 1925 to 1930 he taught English language and literature at Xavier University until he entered the Cincinnati seminary in 1930 . He received his theology degree from the seminary in Norwood , Ohio. There he received the sacrament of ordination on August 15, 1935 by the Archbishop of Cincinnati , John Timothy McNicholas OP . He then worked for a short time as a pastor and teacher in Cincinnati. He conducted his studies a. a. at the Collegium Angelicum in Rome, where he obtained a doctorate in canon law in 1939 . In the same year he became deputy vicar general and in 1942 vicar general of the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, in addition he taught canon law at the seminary. In June 1942 he was appointed papal chamberlain .

On March 10, 1945 Pope Pius XII appointed him . to the Bishop of Steubenville. The Archbishop of Cincinnati, John Timothy McNicholas, donated him episcopal ordination on May 1 of that year ; Co-consecrators were the Bishop of Columbus , Michael Joseph Ready , and the Auxiliary Bishop of Cincinnati, George John Rehring . In January 1949 he was made an honorary doctorate from Notre Dame University . Pope John XXIII appointed him on June 8, 1960 as Papal Assistant to the Throne .

On September 27, 1977 Pope Paul VI. the resignation put forward by John Anthony King Mussio for reasons of age.
