John C. Greene

John Colton Greene (born March 5, 1917 in Indianapolis , Indiana , † November 12, 2008 in Pacific Grove , California ) was an American historian of science . He was a professor at the University of Connecticut .

Greene grew up in Vermillion ( South Dakota ) and studied at the University of South Dakota with a bachelor's degree in 1938 and at Harvard University with a master's degree in history in 1939. 1941/42 he was a junior fellow at Harvard. During military service in World War II from 1942 to 1946 he was in Tasmania , India , Iran , Palestine and Italy . In Iran he met the American nurse Ellen Wiemann, whom he married in Cairo in 1945 and with whom he had three two sons and one daughter.

In 1952 he received his doctorate from Harvard. Before that, he had taught at the University of Chicago since 1948 and at the University of Wisconsin from 1952 . From 1956 he was professor at Iowa State University , 1962/63 at the University of California, Berkeley , from 1963 at the University of Kansas and from 1967 until his retirement in 1987 at the University of Connecticut. After his retirement he initially continued to live in Storrs and moved to California after the death of his wife in 1998.

In 1974 he was a visiting scientist at Corpus Christi College of the University of Cambridge and in 1978 at the National Museum of History and Technology of the Smithsonian Institution . He dealt with early American history of science, the development of ideas of evolution in the West and the relationship between science and religion or world views.

In 2002 he received the George Sarton Medal . In 1966/67 he was a Guggenheim Fellow . In 1985 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of South Dakota. From 1976 to 1977 he was President of the History of Science Society .
