John D. Hickerson

John Dewey Hickerson (born January 26, 1898 in Crawford , Texas , † January 18, 1989 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American diplomat who served as Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs between 1949 and 1953 , from 1955 to 1959 Ambassador to Finland and from 1960 to 1961 Ambassador to the Philippines .

Life

After attending school, Hickerson did his military service in the US Army after the USA entered the First World War on April 6, 1917 . After the end of the war, he completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Texas , which he completed in 1920 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). In 1920 he joined the Foreign Service and was initially Vice Consul in Tampico and then from 1922 to 1924 Vice Consul at the Embassy in Brazil . He then served as consul in Pará between 1924 and 1925 and as consul at the embassy in Canada from 1925 to 1927 .

After his return between 1928 and 1940, Hickerson was deputy head of the Western Europe unit in the State Department in Washington, DC and at the same time between 1934 and 1941 a member of the Appeals and Examination Committee of the State Department. During the Second World War he was from 1940 to 1946 secretary of the US portion of the Joint Defense Committee of the United States and Canada and in 1944 head of the division for the British Commonwealth of Nations in the State Department. He then acted as deputy head from 1944 to 1947 and then from 1947 to 1949 as head of the Department for European Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

On July 6, 1949, Hickerson was appointed Assistant Secretary of State for International Organization Affairs, succeeding Dean Rusk, and head of the Department of International Organization Affairs in the State Department and held this position until he was replaced by Robert D. Murphy on July 28, 1953. After advising the National War College (NWC) from 1953 to 1955 , he succeeded Jack K. McFall as ambassador to Finland on November 23, 1955 and held this office until November 3, 1959, after which on November 28, 1959 Edson O. Sessions succeeded him there.

Most recently, Hickerson replaced Charles E. Bohlen on January 13, 1960 as ambassador to the Philippines and remained in this post until he retired on December 8, 1961. On February 5, 1962, William E. Stevenson succeeded him as ambassador on.

Hickerson, who died of cancer , was married with one son.
