After his nomination, Holdren became the target of a public campaign by anti-abortion and anti-climate policies. The attacks against Holdren are mainly based on passages in his contribution to a book published in 1977, which discusses possible measures to control overpopulation of the earth, including improved family planning and easier access to contraception and abortions, but also forced abortions and sterilization of women after they have given birth to a certain number of children.

Holdren opposes the use of nuclear weapons in response to attacks with biological and chemical weapons. He is open to scientifically investigating the question of whether, if necessary, the threat of global warming could be prevented with the use of available technical means (" geo-engineering "). Holdren was named 34th in the Top Hundred Global Thought Leaders of 2009 along with Steven Chu of Foreign Policy ; Their merit: They have given top science political influence again.

Holdren also takes an active part in the public debate on the climate crisis . He once said about the relationship between climate protection , climate adaptation and the suffering from global warming : “We basically have three options: protection, adaptation and suffering. We will have a part of everyone. The question arises what the mix will be like. The more protection we operate, the less adjustment will be required and the less suffering there will be. "
