Jane Lubchenco (born December 4, 1947 in Denver , Colorado ) is an American marine biologist.

Live and act

Jane Lubchenco studied biology at Colorado College , where she graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1969. She received her Masters in Zoology from the University of Washington in 1971 . She then moved to Harvard University , where she received her PhD in ecology in 1975 . She then taught at Harvard University for two years until 1977 and then received a teaching position at Oregon State University , where she held a professorship in marine ecology from 1977 to 2009.

She is married to marine ecologist Bruce Quantity . The couple have a son, Duncan Lubchenco Quantity, who works at the National Center for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis .

During the 1990s, she served two terms as a consultant to President Bill Clinton on the National Science Board . In 1993, she received the MacArthur Fellowship, worth $ 500,000 . She has also won a Pew scholarship , several prizes and eight honorary doctorates . In 2002 she won the Heinz Award in the Environment and in 2003 the Kidneyberg Prize for Science in the Public Interest , and in 2012 the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award . In 2015 she received the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement , in 2017 the Public Welfare Medal of the National Academy of Sciences , and in 2018 the Vannevar Bush Award of the National Science Foundation .

She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (since 1993), the National Academy of Sciences (since 1996), the American Philosophical Society (since 1998) and the Royal Society (since 2004). In 1997 she became president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

In December 2008, President Barack Obama announced that he would appoint her chairman of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration . In this position, she was confirmed on March 19, 2009 by the US Senate . She held this office until February 2013. She was thus also ex officio State Secretary in the US Department of Commerce ( Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere ).

Lubchenco has repeatedly drawn attention to the need for government action to curb global warming and has criticized the administration of President George W. Bush for its disrespectful use of science.

Pope Francis appointed her a full member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences on June 8, 2019 .
