John Mills-Cockell

John Mills-Cockell (born May 19, 1943 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a Canadian composer.

Life

Mills-Cockell studied piano with John Coveart , composition with Samuel Dolin and electronic music with Gustav Ciamaga at the Conservatory and the University of Toronto . In 1967 he won the BMI Student Composer Awards for his Movements for Orchestra and Reverberation for Solo Trombone and two tapes.

Since 1966 he has belonged to the mixed media group "Intersystem" (with the sculptor Michael Hayden , the architect Dik Zander and the poet Blake Parker ), which pursued a method of composition and interpretation in which music, film and visual arts are integrated . With the group Syrinx he gave concerts between 1970 and 1972, appeared on the radio and recorded the albums Syrinx and Long Lost Relatives .

After a stay in England, he returned to Canada in 1974, where he has worked primarily as a composer ever since. In addition to numerous mixed media pieces, Mills-Cockell composed pieces for chamber music ensembles and for electronic instruments as well as film and theater music.
