René Bonnière (born March 10, 1928 in Lyon , France ) is a French- Canadian director of predominantly television series and early documentaries .

Life

René Bonnière began his professional career in his native France. He made drawings for the animated film The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep ( La bergère et le ramoneur ) (1952), which was based on the fairy tale of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen and directed by the French cartoonist Paul Grimault . The film was nominated for the BAFTA Award in 1958 for best animated film . Then Bonnière was called up for military service in France, where he made a documentary with the mountain troops. He filmed life as it actually was and was very attached to cinéma vérité . He learned film editing a . a. with Henri Colpi . Bonnière first moved to New York and worked in a bank on Wall Street , then moved to Canada. At Crawley Films he shot a few half-hour documentaries, where he was responsible for directing and editing. The topics were, for example, the whale and seal hunters or the mining of diamonds in British Columbia . After a few short films, Bonnière gained experience with his first longer film Amanita Pestilens (1963), which was a commercial failure. The later Oscar-nominated actress Geneviève Bujold made her film debut in it. Bonnière returned to documentaries, except for his participation in the television series Wojeck (1966) with John Vernon . In Toronto he filmed a theatrical performance of Shakespeare's play Hamlet (1973) . Over the next three decades of his career, he shot mostly episodes of dramatic television series, giving the actors a lot of freedom as a director. One of his assistant directors ( assistant directors ) on the Canadian television series Adderly was Jamie Paul Rock , who later brought him to the dramatic agent series Nikita ( La Femme Nikita ) (1997-2001) by Joelaghov with Peta Wilson and Roy Dupuis . Bonnière was responsible for directing 21 episodes across all five seasons.

René Bonnière was nominated twice for the Gemini Awards , namely in 1990 for directing the television series Diamonds and in 1993 for the series ENG
