John Arthur "Johnny" Murray (born January 27, 1924 in Hampstead , England , United Kingdom ; † November 18, 2017 in Miami , Florida , United States ) was a British ice hockey player , coach and sports official who, among other things, in 1948 with his team participated in the Winter Olympics.

Career

John Murray started playing ice hockey when he was 11 years old. He played at club level first from 1939 to 1960 for the Wembley Lions in the English National League and their successor in the British National League . With the Löwen he won the ENL in 1937 and 1952 and the BNL in 1957. From 1960 to 1963, when the Lions were out of play, he played for the Southampton Vikings . From 1963 to 1968 he was then player-coach of the reactivated Wembley Lions.

International

Murray was first used in the British national team in 1947. A year later he took part in the Winter Olympics in St. Moritz , where the British took sixth place. It was the last time British ice hockey players participated in the Olympics. At the 1950 World Cup he reached fourth place with the British. Two years later he won the B World Championship with his team . As a player-coach he took part in the B-World Cup in 1961 and the A-World Cup in 1962 .

Life alongside and after an active career

Murray, who graduated from Harrow Technical College, served in the Royal Air Force and later the Royal Engineers during World War II . After retiring from his career, he was Vice-President of the British Ice Hockey Association from 1982 and at times also worked for the IOC and the British Olympic Association . In 1996 he was inducted into the British Ice Hockey Hall of Fame . He died at the age of 93 in a hospital in Miami , where he had been while on a cruise.
