John Njenga

John Njenga (born December 25, 1928 in Tigoni near Kiambu , Central Province; † November 4, 2018 in Nairobi ) was a Kenyan clergyman and Roman Catholic Archbishop of Mombasa .

Life

John Njenga studied theology and Latin in Tanzania . He received on 17 February 1957, the sacrament of Holy Orders in Kibosho Major Seminary in Tanzania. In 1957 he studied sociology in London and received his doctorate in canon law . He then worked in pastoral care in the Archdiocese of Nairobi .

On October 19, 1970 he was appointed by Pope Paul VI. appointed Bishop of Eldoret . He was ordained bishop by the Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Kenya, Archbishop Pierluigi Sartorelli , on November 22 of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Archbishop of Nairobi, Maurice Michael Otunga , and Bishop of Nyeri , Caesar Gatimu .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Mombasa on October 25, 1988 . With the elevation of the diocese to an archbishopric, he was appointed its first archbishop on May 21, 1990.

On April 1, 2005, his age-related resignation was granted by Pope John Paul II - in one of his last official acts.
