Boniface Wa Lele (born April 14, 1947 in Kyangwithya , † April 9, 2014 in Mombasa ) was Archbishop of Mombasa .

Life

Boniface Lele studied philosophy and theology at the Thomas Aquinas Seminary in Lang'ata, Nairobi, and from 1979 to 1981 spirituality at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . He was ordained a priest on December 8, 1974 .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Kitui on November 2, 1995 . The Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples , Cardinal Jozef Tomko , ordained him episcopal on February 2nd of the following year ; Co- consecrators were Maurice Michael Cardinal Otunga , Archbishop of Nairobi and Military Bishop of Kenya , and William Dunne SPS , Former Bishop of Kitui.

On April 1, 2005, he was appointed Archbishop of Mombasa by John Paul II . On November 1, 2013, Pope Francis accepted his early resignation for health reasons.

Act

Boniface Lele was seen as a key person for understanding with radical Islamic fundamentalists in Kenya. For many years he was chairman of the commission for the interreligious dialogue of the Kenyan bishops' conference as well as the corresponding commission in the AMECEA .
