John Matthew Phillips (* 11. June 1987 in Low Moor , Virginia ) is an American American football poker players on the position of tight ends . He last played for the Arizona Cardinals in the National Football League (NFL).

college

Phillips attended the University of Virginia and ran between 2008 and 2011 for their team, the Cavaliers. He could run 670 yards and score 5 touchdowns .

NFL

Dallas Cowboys

He was selected by the Dallas Cowboys in the 6th round of the 2009 NFL Draft as a total of 208 players . In his rookie season, he was used in 16 games, four of them as a starter , whereby mostly his skills as a blocker and less as a receiver were in demand. In 2010 he missed the entire season due to a cruciate ligament injury . The two following seasons he was used again as a tight end and also as an H-back .

San Diego Chargers

Between 2013 and 2015, Phillips played for the San Diego Chargers , where he formed the tight end corps with Antonio Gates and Ladarius Green . Here, too, he was mostly used as a blocker.

Denver Broncos

In the summer of 2016, he was signed by the Denver Broncos , but was unable to do all of the preparation due to an injury. He was fired after 8 games shortly after the Broncos signed AJ Derby to make room for a defender in the squad.

New Orleans Saints

He has been playing for the New Orleans Saints since the beginning of November 2016 . Shortly before the start of the 2017 Regular Season , Phillips was initially placed on the Injured Reserve List and released a few days later. On December 19, however, he was put back under contract, but after only ten days his engagement was over again. On January 3, 2018, after Garrett Griffin lost another tight end due to an injury, he was signed a third time.
In 2018 he couldn't make it into the squad and was fired shortly before the start of the regular season .

Arizona Cardinals

In order to strengthen the block potential under the direction of their new offensive coordinator , the Arizona Cardinals decided on John Phillips and gave him a new contract on October 30, 2018. He was released in May 2019.

Kansas City Chiefs

In late May 2019, the Kansas City Chiefs signed him; however, he was released after only eight days.
