John Satterthwaite (Bishop of Gibraltar)

John Richard Satterthwaite (born November 17, 1925 in Whicham , Cumberland , † May 23, 2014 ) was a British Anglican theologian . He was Bishop of Fulham (1970–1980) and from 1980 to 1993 Bishop of the Diocese in Europe of the Church of England .

Satterthwaite was born to William and Clare Satterthwaite. He was a typical country boy who attended local schools. He went to the Millom Grammar School in Millom in the county of Cumbria and later studied at the University of Leeds . In preparation for the priesthood, he attended the College of the Resurrection in Mirfield in the county of West Yorkshire . He began his church service as a priest as vicar ( curate ) at St Barnabas's Church in Carlisle and at St Michael Paternoster Royal Church in the City of London . He was then parish priest ( Vicar ) at the Guild Church in St Dunstan-in-the-West . From 1955 to 1970 he worked in the service of the Archbishop of Canterbury at Lambeth Palace . He was secretary and later general secretary of the Council on Foreign Relations of the Church of England. From 1967 to 1968 he was the first joint secretary of the Anglican-Roman Catholic International Commission (ARCIC) in the joint preparatory commission.

In 1970 he was ordained a bishop . He was Bishop of Fulham from 1970 to 1980, and was subordinate to the Bishop of London as a suffragan bishop without his own diocese . In his capacity as Bishop of Fulham, Satterthwaite was responsible for the Anglican congregations in Northern and Central Europe ( Jurisdiction of North and Central Europe ). Its official title was "Bishop of Fulham and Gibraltar". In September 1973 he consecrated the newly built Holy Trinity Church in Cannes under his jurisdiction as Bishop of Fulham and Gibraltar .

In 1980, after the introduction of the new diocese in Europe ( Diocese in Europe ), he became Bishop in Europe with the official title "Bishop of Gibraltar in Europe".

On September 30, 1993, Satterthwaite retired as Bishop of Gibraltar. He was succeeded as Bishop of Gibraltar by John William Hind . He lived in Carlisle since his retirement.
