John William Hind

John William Hind (born June 19, 1945 in Watford , Hertfordshire ) is an English clergyman . He was the Bishop of Chichester in the Church of England from 2001 to 2012 .

life and career

Hind attended the Watford Grammar School for Boys in Watford, Hertfordshire. He studied at the University of Leeds Theology , where he made 1966 his Bachelor of Arts , then worked as a teacher and as a college lecturer. From 1970 he attended Ripon College in Cuddesdon near Oxford to prepare for the priesthood . In 1972 he became a deacon ordained, 1973 in Southwark Cathedral in London for priests .

In 1972 he became assistant vicar in Catford and held this office until 1976, after which he was vicar at Christ Church in Forest Hill until 1982 . In 1982 he became the priest in charge of St Paul Forest Hill and remained so until 1983. From 1982 to 1991 he was the rector of Chichester Theological College . In 1982, he was also canon and Bursalis Präbendar of Chichester Cathedral .

From 1991 to 1993 he was auxiliary bishop in the parish of Horsham in the diocese of Chichester . During this time he was officially named Bishop of Horsham. From 1993 to 2001 Hind was Bishop of the Diocese of Europe in Gibraltar .

Hind held offices in various church organizations. From 1991 he was chairman of the Faith and Order Advisory Group of the Church of England, which advises the House of Bishops on questions of ecumenism . Since 1999 he has been a member of the Faith and Order Commission of the World Council of Churches . He is a member of the Inter Anglican Standing Commission , which is responsible for ecumenical matters within the Anglican denominations. In this function, Hind worked in the working group that was involved in drafting the Meissen Declaration on cooperation between the Evangelical Church in Germany and the Church of England.

From 2001 to 2012 he was Bishop of Chichester, succeeding Eric Waldram Kemp .

In July 2011, Hind announced his resignation; He officially retired at the end of April 2012. He was succeeded as Bishop of Chichester by Martin Warner .

family

Hind is the son of Harold Hind (1914–1997) and Joan Kemp (1918–1976). He is married to Janet McLintock, a former social worker and current (as of 2009) advisor to the Church of England on child protection issues for the Diocese of Guildford . You have three children.

Membership in the House of Lords

Hind was a member of the House of Lords as Spiritual Lord from 2008 to 2012 . His political interests include Hindu belief and church constitution on a national and international level, as well as Europe and Turkey .

Working in public

Hind takes a conservative position on questions of canon law. He is considered a traditionalist. This was particularly evident in his attitude towards the question of homosexuality .

In 2003, he signed an open letter as one of 17 Bishops in the Church of England who rejected the nomination of Jeffrey John , an openly gay priest in a committed relationship, as Auxiliary Bishop of Reading .

Hind is opposed to initiatives that affect the registered partnership .

At the meeting of the Commission for Faith and Church Questions in the Orthodox Academy in the Gonia Monastery on the island of Crete in October 2009, Hind welcomed the speech by the Metropolitan of the Syrian Orthodox Malankara Church , Geevarghese Mor Coorilos , and emphasized the similarities between the two churches.

In October 2009, he publicly stated that he intended to convert to Catholicism . Faults in Anglicanism would make it impossible for him to remain in the Church of England . A prerequisite for him, however, is that the Catholic Church fully recognize his previous priesthood. Hind later commented that his initial remarks had been misunderstood. He welcomed the invitation from Pope Benedict XVI. to the Church of England for a full denomination, but he himself would remain a member of the Church of England.
