The John T. Essberger was a sea rescue cruiser of the 44 m class of the German Society for the Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS).

history

The lead ship in the 44 meter class was built in 1975 by the Schweers shipyard in Bardenfleth under shipyard no. 6426 built. The DGzRS internal designation was KRS 9. The callsign was DBAI. The daughter boat Elsa (hull number 6427) had the internal name KRT 9.

The type ship of the 44 m class of the DGzRS was created with the John T. Essberger ; two and three years later, the two sister ships Hermann Ritter and Wilhelm Kaisen were built. Until the Hermann Marwede was built in 2003, the 44-meter cruiser was the largest unit of the DGzRS.

In 2000 the John T. Essberger and the Wilhelm Kaisen were overhauled at the Fr. Lürssen shipyard over a period of several months. Among other things, the on-board technology was renewed, the crew quarters redesigned and the on-board hospital converted into a multi-purpose room. The on-board hospital could be converted into additional accommodation or a meeting room if required. In addition, the stern of the rescue cruiser and daughter boats was widened mainly in the area below the water surface. These widenings led to better course stability at high seas from aft. With the extensive renovation work, the service life of both SAR units was extended by around twelve years.

The John T. Essberger was decommissioned on May 10, 2011 in Bremerhaven.

Naming

The ship was in Bardenfleth on the name of the owner and promoter of DGzRS, on April 26, 1975 John T. Essberger , baptized . The daughter boat received the first name of Essberger's wife.

deployment

The John T. Essberger had been stationed in the area of the Baltic island of Fehmarn since July 1975 . In addition to the regular permanent berth in the old naval port in Großenbrode , there was also an often used position on the lake in front of Burgstaaken . The cruiser was used around the island of Fehmarn and in the western areas of the Baltic Sea to Bornholm.

Whereabouts

The John T. Essberger has been on display in the Technik Museum Speyer since May 29, 2011 . For this purpose, it was transferred to Speyer across the Rhine in May 2011. The cruiser was on its own as far as Duisburg, where it was loaded onto a pontoon. The ship was brought from the Speyer natural harbor to the technology museum on a special vehicle.
