Jonathan "Jon" Lajoie [ laʒwa ] (born August 21, 1980 in Montreal ) is a Canadian comedian , musician , rapper and actor who became known through his video clips and skits on Internet portals such as YouTube . Many of his videos have been viewed millions of times. From 2009 to 2015 he was also seen in the sitcom The League .

Life

Lajoie was born in Saint-Hubert, Quebec. He graduated from Dawson College in 2001 with a drama program. Since 2002 he has played an Anglophone musician named Thomas Edison in Radio Canada's francophone soap opera L'auberge du chien noir . He is influenced by many comedy groups and personalities: Monty Python , Christopher Guest , Ricky Gervais , Will Ferrell , Eddie Izzard , Mitch Hedberg , Flight of the Conchords , Kids in the Hall , Arrested Development and Peter Sellers .

On January 30, 2009 his first album was released under the title You Want Some of This? (Normal Guy Productions) which for now is only available online or at concerts. It contains all the songs from his YouTube sketches and additional titles. Unofficial excerpts of his tour, which is a mixture of stand-up comedy and musical live performances of his most popular YouTube videos, can also be seen on YouTube.

Since October 2009 Lajoie can be seen in the US sitcom The League and has regular appearances on the Canadian television station Comedy Central . In 2012 he made a cameo in Quentin Dupieux's short film Wrong Cops Chapter 1 , and in 2013 he appeared in Dupieux's surreal comedy Wrong Cops .

Music videos and skits

Jon Lajoie's videos are to a large extent music videos , each of which can be assigned to a specific genre . Mostly this is hip-hop and rap , but sometimes also pop , electro or mainstream music . The quality of the songs can be compared quite well with related music, but the content is entirely designed to parody the corresponding genre or to portray it in a particularly clichéd manner. In Everyday Normal Guy, for example, the comedian tells about his supposedly average life in the style of gangsta rap and brings various examples of banalities, which is completely in contrast to the usual content of the musical style, which is usually characterized by self-glorification and description of criminal acts.

In the video WTF Collective Lajoie plays with different tones of voice and disguises quite a rap crew with comedic scale, flamboyant characters such as MC Confusing , the only disjointed phrases rhymes, MC fatigue , falling asleep during the text or MC Gets side-tracked Easily the constantly deviates from its original theme. At the center of the group is the chorus guy who, involuntarily but forced by his constant unemployment and financial hardship, sings the melodious chorus and finally kills himself because he cannot find a better job. In the continuation of the video, Lajoie plays additional characters like a rapper who is not able to pronounce words in the plural or a clichéd Canadian.

Lajoie's best-known character is MC Vagina , a talentless rapper with obviously chauvinistic and macho thoughts. His songs with names like Show me your Genitals or Very Super Famous always describe the masculinity and fame of MC Vaginas in an absolutely exaggerated way and contain sexist remarks.

With the video Mainstream Media Commercial , Lajoie has been criticizing society by making the, in his opinion, stupid effect of the mass media the subject of a satirical commercial . The central message of the video is that the mass media distracts from real, important problems by covering the citizen with tabloid-like trivialities.

In the video Life Lessons with Jon Lajoie , Lajoie utters “wisdoms”, at the end he says: It's not about what your country can do for you, it's about what your country can steal from other countries. In Radio Friendly Song he is furious about the lack of imagination of the radio stations, which in his view always play the same music and criticizes this conformism to which the producers submit.

In June 2009, immediately after the death of the famous pop singer Michael Jackson , the new song Michael Jackson is dead was released . With this, Lajoie criticizes the hypocrisy of the media, which years earlier had denounced Michael Jackson as a pedo criminal and now suddenly staged a great mourning for the death of the pop icon.

In WTF Collective 2 he plays a homosexual and a homophobic character with whom he criticizes the Westboro Baptist Church . He also stages the characters MC Extremely Politically Correct and MC Canadian Stereotype, with which he shows the advantages of the political system in Canada (including free medical treatment).
