Jonathan Van Ness (* 28. March 1987 in Quincy , Illinois ) is an American hairdresser , podcasters , television personality and known for Webserien- parody Gay of Thrones and as a nursing expert in Netflix telecast Queer Eye .

Life

Origin and education

Van Ness was born and raised in Quincy, Illinois, USA. He was the first male cheerleader in Quincy Senior High School and continued cheerleading in college. He lost his cheerleading scholarship because his grades dropped due to his habit of skipping classes to watch reruns of the Golden Girls series. Van Ness then attended the University of Arizona with a focus on political science , but dropped out after one semester to train as a hair stylist at the Aveda Institute in Minneapolis .

Career

After training as a stylist, Van Ness worked in Arizona for five years before moving to the West Coast of Los Angeles in 2009 , where he found a job as a personal assistant at the Sally Hershberger Salon. He works at MoJoHair and Stile Salon, both in Los Angeles, which he co-founded with Monique Northrop at Arte Salon in New York City .

In 2013, Van Ness did the hair of his then girlfriend Erin Gibson, who worked for the comedy website Funny or Die . Gibson asked him to do a rerun of a Game of Thrones episode as a parody for Funny or Die ; this subsequently became the Gay of Thrones web series. In 2018 Van Ness was nominated for an Emmy Award for this web series.

Since 2015 Van Ness moderates the weekly podcast Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness and Netflix plays 2018 revival of Queer Eye on the role of nursing experts.

In 2018 Van Ness alternated between Los Angeles and New York.

Private life

Van Ness has always been openly gay and has been harassed and even received death threats throughout school. He used humor as a coping mechanism and relied on a small group of close friends to help him do this. In June 2019 Van Ness declares one's own gender identity to be non-binary (genderqueer) , meaning "sometimes feeling like a boy and sometimes like a girl"; nevertheless he would like to continue to be referred to with masculine pronouns .

Van Ness had already publicly stated in 2018 that he had psoriasis and wanted to help other sufferers. In September 2019, Van Ness came out as HIV positive as part of the publication of his autobiography . He writes about a traumatic rape he suffered in childhood and his past as a drug addict and prostitute .
