Jorge Ángel Livraga Rizzi (born September 3, 1930 in Buenos Aires , † October 7, 1991 in Madrid , Spain ) was a poet , writer , philosopher , essayist , lecturer and educator from Argentina . He was a member of the International Philo-Byzantine Academy and University (IPHBAU), the International Burckhardt Academy (Italy) and the Theosophical Society (1947 to 1957). In 1957 he founded the international organization New Acropolis for philosophy , culture and volunteering .

Life

Jorge Ángel Livraga-Rizzi was born in Buenos Aires to Italian parents. His mother, Victoria Rizzi, and his father, Ángel Livraga, an industrial engineer, were of Italian descent whose families emigrated to Argentina in the late 19th century. His father died when he was barely 15 years old. This death aroused the first philosophical questions and gave impetus to the search for the meaning of life.

A little later he became interested in music and in reading various authors, including " Kafka , Sartre , Marx , Kant , Scheler ". He studied philosophy and art history at the University of Buenos Aires , and later also attended the medical faculty. He became a member of the Theosophical Society and its library, although he was always critical of the organization.

Later he came into contact with other esoteric and philosophical groups and devoted himself to the study of history, religions and symbolism. He was a great admirer of the works of Ruben Dario and Octavio Paz . He wrote poetry himself and received the Argentine National Prize for Poetry for his book "Lotos" in 1951.

He followed the theosophical ideals as postulated by the Russian occultist Helena Blavatsky and belonged to the Theosophical Society of Argentina until he left it or until he was expelled, according to the organization's international secretariat, for poor conduct.

In 1957 he founded the journal “Theosophical Studies”. In the same year he expanded this work on the occasion of a visit by the President of the Theosophical Society , Sri Ram . At his suggestion he founded the New Acropolis organization together with his wife Ada Albrecht. His intention was to combine the teachings of Blavatsky with the work of various ancient philosophers, such as that of Plato (or that of the Neoplatonists ), Pythagoras , Confucius and Giordano Bruno . He also wanted to make known and disseminate various concepts of Western and Eastern esotericism among the youth, following the model of the classical schools of philosophy, such as that of the Platonic Academy in Athens or that of the eclectic schools .

“We find that humanity has an immense treasure trove of wisdom that has been hidden and forgotten. It is no longer accessible to young people. A wisdom that provides answers to the meaning of life for the betterment of society and the world in which we live. JALivraga "

Livraga students founded New Acropolis schools in other Latin American countries such as Uruguay , Chile , Peru , Brazil and Bolivia . During this time he gave courses, public lectures and created course manuals for the subjects of psychology , Eastern and Western wisdom, theological symbolism, rhetoric , history of philosophy, comparative religions, philosophy of science, metaphysics , aesthetics and other topics.

In 1972 Livraga went to Spain and established a New Acropolis Center in Europe. At that time, two Argentine students, Delia Steinberg Guzman and Fernand Schwarz, were opening New Acropolis schools in Spain and France. In 1981 he separated from his wife Ada Albrecht, who founded her own organization, Hastinapura. In 1988 he was convicted of illegal gun possession by the Madrid Regional Court. In the course of the following years up to the present day, students from Livraga or from other countries have founded more schools from New Acropolis in more than sixty countries across Europe, America and Asia.

After his death in 1991, he left his archaeological collection to the Rodrigo Caro private museum in Madrid. His birthplace in Buenos Aires has been converted into a museum.

criticism

Weber attributes to Livraga that he considered himself a legitimate heir to the theosophical tradition. In his works, Livraga tries to transfer old and esoteric ideas into the present. In his writings, Livraga repeatedly criticizes the prevailing materialism , atheism and the current democratic systems. Materialism and concentration on the external world cause people to forget their true inner being. This leads to a crisis of meaning in the individual and imbalances in the collective, for example in the current ecological crisis, in a globally increasing social gradient or in an increase in armed conflicts and acts of terrorism. Livraga criticizes the current democracies for actually representing plutocracies . Politicians lack internal values and technical knowledge for the work for which they are responsible. For this reason, Livraga is of the opinion that our world today is heading for a crisis or a new Middle Ages. However, Livraga does not see the key to a change in a different or better system than that of democracy, but in a revitalization of the inner values of individual people. In his opinion, a good person will produce good results in any political system, and he wanted to achieve this promotion of inner values with schools of philosophy.
