José Carlos da Costa Araújo , known as Zé Carlos (born February 7, 1962 in Rio de Janeiro , † July 24, 2009 ibid) was a Brazilian football goalkeeper . He died of cancer in a hospital in Rio de Janeiro .

Career

society

Zé Carlos was active between 1983 and 2000. The goalkeeper began his career with Americano FC (RJ) . After a short time he switched to Flamengo Rio de Janeiro for the first time , but only stayed here for a few months until he joined Rio Branco AC in 1984 . After a brief stint at Rio Branco, Zé Carlos moved back to Rio de Janeiro. There he made his sporting breakthrough and won the Copa União 1987 with Flamengo in 1987 . This was not recognized by the association as a championship title win. In 1986 he was able to win the state championship in Rio de Janeiro with the club and in 1991 repeat this success. After seven years he separated from Flamengo and signed with Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte , where he only stayed for a few games. During the season he went abroad, where he played for SC Farense in Portugal from 1992 to 1994 . In the 1993/93 season he was sixth in the league with Farense. It was the best placement since 1980. In the summer of 1994, the goalkeeper moved to league rival Vitória Guimarães . There he earned fourth place in the league with the club behind champions FC Porto , Benfica and Sporting Lisbon . During this time, however, Zé Carlos did not manage to fight for a regular place and he often found himself on the exchange bank. After a season he decided in the summer of 1995 to transfer to the newly promoted FC Felgueiras . After this could not keep the class, however, Zé Carlos moved back to Brazil, where he found accommodation with his former club Flamengo. But the goalkeeper was not happy here either and in 1997 he left Rio to finally guard the goal of EC Vitória . After he stayed at the ECV without much playing time, he decided to withdraw from active professional football. But in 1999 he made his comeback, first with XV de Piracicaba and finally for América FC . The last stop was Tubarão FC in 2000 . During his active career, Zé Carlos was active for eleven clubs. Most of the games, a total of 352, he played for Flamengo Rio de Janeiro.

National team

Zé Carlos was called up to the Brazilian national football team several times , but only played three games in total, as he was mostly only the substitute goalkeeper behind Taffarel . He was in the squad during the 1988 Summer Olympics and the 1990 World Cup , although he was not used.
