Cláudio André Mergen Taffarel (born May 8, 1966 in Santa Rosa ) is a former Brazilian soccer goalkeeper . In 2004 and from 2011 to 2016 Taffarel was the goalkeeping coach of Galatasaray Istanbul . In January 2018 he took up this position for the third time. Taffarel also worked as a goalkeeper coach for the Brazilian national soccer team .
Career
society
Taffarel began his career in 1985 with the Brazilian club Internacional Porto Alegre . In 1988 he was named Brazil's Footballer of the Year . In the summer of 1990, Taffarel moved to the Italian first division club AC Parma . At Parma he kept the gate for three years before moving to AC Reggiana for 18 months . In January 1995 Taffarel moved back to Brazil to Atlético Mineiro . He stayed there until 1998.
For the 1998/99 season he moved to Turkey to Galatasaray Istanbul . Here Taffarel won the Turkish championship in 1999 and 2000, the Turkish Cup in 1999 and 2000 and won the UEFA Cup in 2000 when Galatasaray became the first Turkish team to win a European competition. Taffarel was elected player of the game in the final on May 17, 2000 in a 4-1 draw (0-0) against Arsenal . With a 2-1 win against Real Madrid , the European Supercup was won a short time later . In 2001 Taffarel moved again to AC Parma, where he ended his career in 2003.
National team
In 1987, Taffarel made his debut in the Brazilian national soccer team . He was a regular goalkeeper at the 1990 World Cup . However, the team already failed in the last sixteen. Taffarel celebrated his greatest triumph at the 1994 World Cup in the USA. After fighting their way through to the final, the team won against Italy on penalties . Taffarel managed to keep the penalty shot by Daniele Massaro . Four years later, at the 1998 World Cup in France, the team had the chance to defend the title. Taffarel led his team into the next round with two saved penalties in the penalty shoot-out of the semi-final game against the Netherlands . Ronald de Boer and Phillip Cocu were the ones who failed because of the goalkeeper. However, it was only enough for the runner-up title in the final. Host France lost 3-0.
In addition, the goalkeeper took part in the Copa America in 1995 and 1997 , with the '97 tournament being won. In addition, Taffarel was in the Brazilian squad at the 1998 CONCACAF Gold Cup , where they reached 3rd place.

After the active career
In 2004 Taffarel was a goalkeeping coach at Galatasaray Istanbul for a short time . After just under a year, he and his former teammate Paolo Roberto opened a player agency. Since the 2011/12 season, Taffarel was again goalkeeping coach at Galatasaray Istanbul. He is currently the goalkeeping coach of the Brazilian national team. After Galatasaray and head coach Hamza Hamzaoğlu had separated by mutual agreement, Taffarel was appointed interim coach on November 19, 2015.
