José Carmelo Martínez Lázaro OAR (born August 21, 1954 in Luezas , La Rioja ) is Bishop of Cajamarca in Peru .

Life

José Carmelo Martínez Lázaro joined the order of the Augustinian Recollects and was ordained a priest on July 19, 1980 . His order sent him to the mission in Peru. There he was pastor of the cathedral parish in Chota.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Prelate of Chota on March 27, 2002 . The Bishop of Chachapoyas , Emiliano Antonio Cisneros Martínez OAR, ordained him on 5 May of the same year Bishop ; Co- consecrators were Rino Passigato , Apostolic Nuncio in Peru , and Ángel Francisco Simón Piorno , Bishop of Cajamarca .

He was appointed Bishop of Cajamarca on October 12, 2004, and was introduced to the office on December 19 of the same year.

Bishop Martínez has been taking a sabbatical year since June 2019 . Pope Francis therefore appointed Bishop Fortunato Pablo Urcey OAR of Chota as Apostolic Administrator sede plena of the Diocese of Cajamarca.

Motto

José Carmelo Martínez chose a self- statement from Jesus in the Gospel of John ( Joh 14,6  EU ) as the episcopal motto : Via, Veritas et Vita ( Latin for the way, the truth and the life ).
