José Fernández Arteaga (born September 12, 1933 in Santa Inés de Barraza ) is old archbishop of Chihuahua .

Life

José Fernández Arteaga was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Tulancingo on April 4, 1957 .

Pope Paul VI appointed him on July 13, 1974 Bishop of Apatzingán . The Apostolic Delegate in Mexico , Mario Pio Gaspari , ordained him episcopal on September 12 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Victorino Alvarez Tena , Bishop of Celaya , and José Abraham Martínez Betancourt , Bishop of Tacámbaro .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Colima on February 8, 1980 . He was named Coadjutor Archbishop of Chihuahua on December 20, 1988, and was introduced to the office on January 25 of the next year. When Adalberto Almeida y Merinos retired on June 24, 1991, he succeeded him as Archbishop of Chihuahua.

On September 29, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI. his resignation request submitted for reasons of age.
