José María Hernández González

José María Hernández González (born January 17, 1927 in Pénjamo , † January 19, 2015 in Celaya ) was Bishop of Nezahualcóyotl .

Life

José María Hernández González was ordained a priest on March 25, 1950 . In October 1973 he became the first vicar general of the newly established diocese of Celaya .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Chilapa on February 18, 1983 . The Apostolic Delegate in Mexico , Girolamo Prigione , ordained him episcopal on April 26th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Rafael Bello Ruiz , Bishop of Acapulco , and Victorino Alvarez Tena , Bishop of Celaya.

On November 18, 1989, he was appointed bishop of Nezahualcóyotl , and on January 18 of the next year he was appointed to the office. During his tenure, a catechism magazine was published for the first time in the diocese. On July 8, 2003, Pope John Paul II accepted his age-related resignation. José María Hernández González then retired to Celaya. He died there on January 19, 2015, two days after his 88th birthday.
