José María Tranquilino Francisco de Jesús de Velasco Gómez (born July 6, 1840 in Temascalcingo , † August 26, 1912 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican art and landscape painter .

Life

Velasco, the first of five children of Felipe Velasco and his wife María Antonia Gómez Obregón, came to Mexico City at the age of seven after his father passed away. His siblings also included the physicians Ildefonso and Antonio Velasco .

From 1850 he attended the "Colegio Lancasteriano" of Santa Catalina Mártir, later another Colegio. From 1858 he studied at the Academia Nacional de San Carlos de México . He also studied anatomy , botany , geology and other sciences in order to be able to express the beauty of the Valley of Mexico in his paintings. From 1868 he taught as a professor of perspective at the Academia Nacional de San Carlos de México, which at that time already bore the name Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes. Since his art direction deviated from academic standards, he was released from the chair in 1907.
