José de Calasanz Félix Santiago Cardinal Vives y Tutó OFMCap (born February 15, 1854 in Sant Andreu de Llavaneres , † September 7, 1913 in Monte Porzio Catone ) was a curial cardinal who was known for his conservative attitude, and a writer who more than a hundred titles published.

Life

The son of José Vives and Catalina Tutó attended the Collegio Scholarium Piarum in Mataró . He traveled to Guatemala and studied at Santa Clara University in California . He entered the Capuchin order on July 11, 1869, made profession on July 12, 1870, and made perpetual vows on July 14, 1872. After the liberal revolution, he had to leave the country in 1872 and spent several years in Toulouse. Julien-Florian-Félix Desprez , Archbishop of Toulouse , ordained him priestly on May 26, 1877 in Toulouse .

From 1877 to 1880 he was rector of the Seraphic University of Perpignan, and from 1880 to 1887 he was rector of the Seraphic University of Igualada (Barcelona). As secretary of the General Procurator of the Order, he went to Rome , where he was appointed advisor to the Tribunal of the Inquisition and the Congregatio de Propaganda Fide . He was a member of the papal commission that examined the canonical validity of the Anglican orders from 1895–1896.

Pope Leo XIII. took him on June 19, 1899 as a cardinal deacon in the college of cardinals and on June 22 of the same year he received the title deacon of Sant'Adriano al Foro . He took part in the 1903 conclave , in which Pius X was elected. He was influential and also confessor of the new pope, so that in 1908 he was appointed prefect of the religious congregation .

After his death shortly after an appendectomy, he was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery. The remains were transferred to his hometown parish church on March 2, 2010. A memorial in his honor was also placed there.

  • Cardinal Vives y Tutó also appears in Concilium , a novel by Francisco Asensi . The novel is about the alleged double of Pope Leo XIII. and the cardinal was the closest confidante of this doppelganger.
