biography

Josef Anton Geiser was born in 1945 in Langnau in the canton of Lucerne as the son of the butcher's owner Josef Geiser and his wife Berta Geiser (née Gräninger) into a middle-class family. As is customary in the extremely traditional family, Geiser was to take over the family's business. The family name Geiser dates back to the 14th century in Switzerland.

Geiser first spent his school days in Langnau and then in Reiden. He then studied at a seminary at the Catholic College in Mornings . At an early age he began to paint self-taught in oil. After studying at the commercial academy, Geiser began working as a banker at UBS Bank in Zurich in 1966 . This year he held his first exhibition at the “July Culture Weeks” ( Zurich Festival ).

In 1967 Geiser began traveling and at the same time ended his career at the bank to devote himself entirely to art. He traveled to a large number of countries and used their cultural environment mainly for philosophical and artistic studies. In 1971 Geiser returned to Switzerland and began working on his first “TALE phase”. For this he developed his own "two-phase mixing technique" (see work). This work earned him a travel grant from the Kunstmuseum Winterthur . This enabled him to travel to Japan. Geiser celebrated his greatest successes there, supported by the Swiss embassy. His "TALE" pictures were z. B. exhibited in the "Osaka Formes Gallery" in Tokyo. The highlight of his young career is an exhibition together with Pablo Picasso's pictures in the "Hanshin Gallery" in Osaka, which was held in honor of Picasso's death in 1973. After his stay in Japan, Geiser went to the USA. There he mainly continued to work on his "TALE phases". With the support of the Swiss cultural attaché , Geiser's works have been exhibited in various galleries in the USA. The most famous among them were the "Bader Gallery" in Washington DC . and an exhibition at the Lynn Kottler Gallery in New York .

Geiser returned to Europe in 1974 and, after completing his fifth "TALE phase", went into a long phase of seclusion, which he only ended in 1981. That year Geiser went to Switzerland and resumed exhibiting his paintings there (e.g. in the “Hilton Hotel” in Basel). In 1989 Geiser moved to Germany. On a trip to Russia he met his wife in Moscow; he was in a relationship with her until his death. The couple had their son in 1991. In the following years Geiser painted intensively, founded various art projects and exhibited throughout Germany. In 2007 Josef Anton Geiser died due to a serious cancer disease in the Bavarian city of Weiden in the Upper Palatinate . The artist leaves an extensive legacy.
