Josef Leopold Brandstetter

Josef Leopold Brandstetter (born April 2, 1831 in Beromünster , † April 15, 1924 in Lucerne ) was a Swiss doctor and scholar .

Life

Josef Leopold Brandstetter was born in Beromünster in 1831 as the son of the farmer Leopold Brandstetter. After attending the Gymnasium and Lyceum in Lucerne, he enrolled for a year to study theology one. From 1853 to 1856 he completed his medical studies in Basel and Würzburg . From then on he was ordained as a doctor in Beromünster and Malters . To this end, he was hired from 1872 as a mathematics teacher and principal at the Lucerne Cantonal School . He was also president of the historical association of the V Orte from 1882 to 1922. Brandstetter was politically active as a member of the Lucerne Education Council, namely as a representative of the Liberals.

Josef Leopold Brandstetter was married twice and is the father of the linguist Renward Brandstetter .

Act

Josef Leopold Brandstetter is an important scholar from Central Switzerland, in particular a pioneer of scientific research into names in this region. Valuable works are due to his wide-ranging interest in genealogy , history, place names , language and mathematics, among other things . So he was the author of the 1st volume of the Swiss historical repertory, 1812–90 (1892), the index for the first 70 volumes of the Geschichtsfreund and the Topographical Atlas of Switzerland . Brandstetter also excerpted historical Lucerne sources (including Renward Cysat's writings ) for the editors of the Swiss Idiotikon .
