Josef Müller

Josef Müller (born December 18, 1875 in Aegidienberg , † February 5, 1945 in Ittenbach ) was a folklorist and editor of the Rhenish dictionary .

Life

Müller attended elementary school in Aegidienberg, from 1885 to 1888 the higher boys' school in Königswinter and from 1889 the grammar school in Siegburg , where he passed his Abitur in 1895. This was followed by studies in Bonn in the subjects of German (with Wilhelm Wilmanns , Johannes Franck and Berthold Litzmann ), history (with Ritter ), Latin and Greek (with Bücheler and Usener ). In 1900 Müller received his doctorate from Johannes Franck with studies on the phonology of the dialect of Aegidienberg . After the state examination, he completed his probationary period as a teacher at the Hohenzollern High School in Düsseldorf from 1900 to 1903 . From 1903 he was a grammar school teacher in Trier and then from 1907 a teacher at the Beethoven grammar school in Bonn. Due to the efforts of Johannes Franck, who was entrusted with editing the Rhenish dictionary in 1904, Müller was first partially and then completely on leave from school service in order to work as his employee on the collections for building up the Rhenish dictionary archive. After Franck's death in January 1914, Müller took over the management of the Rhenish Dictionary on behalf of the Prussian Academy of Sciences , after the First World War in close spatial connection, and since 1930 also in institutional connection with the Institute for Historical Regional Studies of the Rhineland at the University of Bonn . In 1922 he was given a teaching position for German folklore and in 1927 he became an honorary professor for this then emerging subject. In 1940 Müller was bid farewell, but he continued to work on the completion of the Rhenish Dictionary until his death.

Müller's main work is the Rhenish Dictionary . In more than 14,000 columns, it contains the lexical inventory of the Middle and Lower Franconian dialects from around 1900 in detailed documentation of all linguistic usage as well as 209 word-geographical maps. It also includes example sentences and idioms. Both the Rhenish dictionary and the ethnological works of Müller, which are oriented towards cultural morphology and interdisciplinary, influenced other works, for example on the institutionalization of other large-scale dialect dictionaries or the Atlas of German Folklore since 1929.
