Josef Matzke

Josef Matzke (born May 15, 1901 in Groß-Hermsdorf , Moravia ; † November 3, 1979 in Neu-Ulm ) was a Moravian-German Catholic clergyman, local researcher and church historian.

Life

Josef Matzke was born as the son of the married couple Josef and Marie Matzke, who ran farm no.25 in Groß-Hermsdorf. After attending elementary school , he entered the grammar school in Kremsier . When, after the upheaval in 1918, the German grammar school was closed there, he came to Freudenthal to attend the boys' seminar and attended the secondary school there . He passed his Matura on June 6, 1921 in Freudenthal.

From 1921 to 1925 he studied at the theological faculty in Olomouc and was ordained a priest on July 5, 1925 . He celebrated his primacy in his home parish. He began his priestly career as a cooperator in Krönau and Sternberg from 1925 to 1928. He was then called by his archbishop to the seminary in Olomouc, where he initially worked as a lecturer , then as an administrator and from 1933 as a vice-superior. In 1931 he received his doctorate in theology. Although he was interested in comparative religious studies , he was given the chair of canon law because of the vacancy. At the beginning of the Second World War, lectures were also discontinued at the theological faculty. Matzke then gave further lectures on canon law at the educational institution of the Capuchin Order in Olomouc. The conditions in Olomouc were such that it seemed useful that Matzke switched to pastoral care in 1938 . He applied for the pastorate of the provost church St. Mauritz in Olomouc. When the German population was expelled from Czechoslovakia in 1946, he came to Kadeltshofen in Bavaria. There he devoted himself from January 1959 as parish vicar to pastoral care. From 1952 to 1972 he was a member of the Augsburg Diocesan Court . In 1970 he was appointed papal house prelate by Pope Paul VI.

In addition to his pastoral duties, he published scientific papers and took up his old hobby, researching local history, in the local history working group he founded for Upper Swabia .

Matzke was honored with the award of the Federal Cross of Merit and the appointment as an honorary citizen of the community of Kadeltshofen. The congregation organized the celebration of the golden jubilee of priests and on his 75th birthday for its honorary citizen. In addition, a street was named (Dr.-Matzke-Straße) in a new building area in Kadeltshofen.

Josef Matzke died on November 3, 1979 in Neu-Ulm. The congregation made the honorary grave in Kadeltshofen available. The Requiem in the parish church Kadeltshofen held Bishop Müller from Augsburg with the assistance of numerous clergy, especially from groups of displaced persons.

He was the initiator and collaborator of historical research in the area of ​​Neu-Ulm, Günzburg and Krumbach . As a displaced person, he wrote a local history for his Bavarian municipality of Kadeltshofen.
