Josef Naus , also Karl Nauß or Joseph Nauß , (born August 29, 1793 in Lechaschau / Tyrol , according to other information in Reutte , † September 6, 1871 in Munich ) was a Bavarian officer (most recently in the rank of major general ) and surveyor . On August 27, 1820, he managed the first ascent of Germany's highest mountain, the Zugspitze .

Life and career

Naus was the son of a judge and came from a family that had immigrated to Tyrol from Belgium or the Netherlands in the 17th century . As a young man, Naus studied surveying technology. In 1813 he joined the Bavarian army. As a second lieutenant he took part in the Wars of Liberation in 1814/15.

With a group of officers and commons, he was commissioned in 1820 to draw up the Werdenfels map for the Topographical Atlas of Bavaria . On August 27, 1820, Naus, his assistant Maier and the mountain guide Johann Georg Tauschl achieved the first recorded ascent of the Zugspitze.

In September 2006, the German Alpine Association (DAV) took the view that the first ascent of the Zugspitze could have been successful before the middle of the 18th century. The basis of these speculations was the rediscovery of a historical map from the 18th century that depicts the Zugspitze region. There are paths up to the summit regions, but not clearly to the Zugspitze summit. A time table with relatively realistic information for the route to the summit reinforces the assumptions. However, the map does not show any ascent by hunters or smugglers.

In 1824 Naus became a first lieutenant . In 1851 Naus was promoted to major general and sent to Ulm as commandant of the federal fortress . Although he retired in 1857, he was reactivated in 1866 and appointed general quartermaster and head of the surveying office.

Josef Naus was the father of two daughters and died in Munich at the age of 78.

filming

In 2006, the film adaptation of the Gipfelsturm was made for Bavarian television , which deals with the official first ascent of the Zugspitze by Josef Naus (first broadcast April 8, 2007). In the homeland drama he has to fight not only with the adversities of nature, but also with the superstitious population. Josef Naus is embodied in it by Johannes Zirner . Bernd Fischerauer was responsible for the script and direction .
