Josef Rittsteuer

Josef Rittsteuer (born September 3, 1914 in Neusiedl am See ; † December 12, 2015 ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic priest and pastor.

Josef Rittsteuer was born as the third of six children in a farmhouse in Neusiedl am See, attended the Hollabrunn boys' seminar after primary school and graduated with honors from the local grammar school in 1934.

After he had received the ordination of Cardinal Innitzer in 1939 , he was first chaplain in Mattersburg and then parish vicar in Wolfau , which spared him military service at the front. From 1941 to the end of 1945 he was parish vicar in Eisenstadt-Schlossgrund and Oberberg. From 1946 he worked as a pastor in the parish Kleinfrauenhaid , before he was the city pastor in the Eisenstadt cathedral from 1962 to 1965 . After his retirement (1998) he continued to work in pastoral care and at the age of 100 he still read St. Mass in the Eisenstadt Franciscan Church.

He played a key role in the establishment of the Eisenstadt diocese in 1960 and subsequently had numerous functions. As the first member of the cathedral chapter of the diocese, he acted as the Regens of the Burgenland seminary in Vienna . In addition, he was editor-in-chief of the Burgenland church newspaper and head of the St. Martins publishing house.

In addition to his books, he wrote more than 200 articles on church history topics. He was chairman of the diocese commissions for church art, church music, liturgy and media. He was also a member of the diocesan court. Because of his historical research he was called the church historian of Burgenland .

One year after his 75th jubilee as a priest, he died on December 12, 2015 at the age of 101.
