Josef Schrage

Josef Schrage (born May 6, 1881 in Olpe ; † November 27, 1953 ibid) was a German trade union official and politician ( center , CDU ).

Live and act

Josef Schrage attended elementary school in Olpe and was a metal worker from 1895 to 1911. From 1916 he was the full-time trade union secretary of the Christian Metalworkers' Association in the Siegen and Olpe districts . From 1919 to 1928 Schrage was the head of the administration for the union in Olpe. From 1928 on he was director of the employment office there .

At the same time, Schrage was politically active within the Center Party. From 1919 to 1933 he was a city councilor in Olpe, he sat in the district council and was a member of the Westphalian provincial parliament from 1921 to 1933 . After the National Socialists came to power, Schrage lost his position as director of the employment office and worked for the newspaper Tremonia (Dortmund) until the end of World War II .

In 1945 he was not only one of the founding members of the CDU in Olpe, but also played a role in the founding of the party in East Westphalia-Lippe. After the liberation he was the full-time mayor of Olpe between May 1945 and March 1946. Then until 1953 honorary district administrator and district council member. Associated with this was membership in the North Rhine-Westphalian district council from 1948 to 1953. Between 1950 and 1953 he was also chairman of the Westphalia-Lippe Regional Assembly .

Schrage also belonged to the Parliamentary Council from 1948 to 1949 . From 1946 to 1953 he was a member of the state parliament of North Rhine-Westphalia . From 1947 he was first deputy chairman of the parliamentary group and from 1949 to 1950, as the successor to Konrad Adenauer, chairman of the Union parliamentary group . From then until his death he was honorary chairman.

In the fall of 1953 he resigned from all his posts and died on November 27, 1953 of complications from a stroke.
