Josef Sprinzl

Josef Sprinzl (born March 9, 1839 in Linz , † November 8, 1898 in Prague ) was an Austrian Catholic theologian . Sprinzl was a professor of dogmatics at the universities in Linz , Salzburg and Prague . He was appointed rector of Prague University and as such was a member of the Bohemian Parliament .

Life

Sprinzl was born as the son of a clothing manufacturer. He studied theology at the University of Linz and the University of Vienna and was ordained a priest in 1861 . In the same year he attended the Higher Education Institute priest Higher Scientific Institute for Diocesan Priests at St. Augustine's in Vienna and received his doctorate in March 1864 at the Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna to the doctor of theology .

From 1864 to April 1875 Sprinzl was professor of moral theology and from 1865 of fundamental theology and special dogmatics at the Linz Theological Institute . In 1867 Strinzl was appointed a real professor in both subjects there. During his time in Linz he was initially editor of the weekly newspaper Katholische Blätter and later, together with Johann Plakolm, editor of the theological-practical quarterly , in which he also published numerous articles with apologetic, dogmatic and canonical content. In his writings he took a stand against the state church laws of 1868 and defended the Pope's dogma of infallibility , which was proclaimed at the first Vatican Council of 1870. However, the sales figures of the magazine fell significantly and could only be increased noticeably again under his successor Josef Schwarz.

In 1875 Sprinzl was appointed full professor of dogmatics at the University of Salzburg, where he was appointed dean of the theological faculty from 1877 to 1878 . In 1883 he accepted the call to the newly founded German Karl Ferdinand University in Prague for the full professorship in dogmatics. Here, too, he was appointed dean several times and was appointed rector of the university from 1889 to 1890. As such, he was also a member of the Bohemian state parliament in 1892. In his teaching activities as well as in his publications Sprinzl represented the doctrine of neo-scholasticism . In 1892 he was appointed canon of the Collegiate Monastery of All Saints at Prague Castle . For his merits the title, he was a 1897 kk government council awarded.

Josef Sprinzl died in Prague on November 8, 1898, at the age of 59. His body was transferred to Linz. He was an active board member of the German Association for Urban Affairs in Prague and a full member of the Society for the Promotion of German Science, Art and Literature in Bohemia. Sprinzl was also Archbishop of Salzburg and Episcopal Linz consistorial councilor .
