history
The hut was built in 1935 by Kahlenberg AG as part of the high road construction above the Elisabethwiese and opened on June 18, 1935. It was named after the wife of Richard Schmitz, the mayor of Vienna at the time . In the autumn of 1941 a Wehrmacht service was set up in the hut . In the spring of 1946, the owner, Kahlenberg AG, reopened the hut as the third company. It was one of the most modern excursion businesses in Vienna with an electrically operated kitchen and electrical heating, although the tenant Robert Schlick was unable to provide the guests with the food and drinks they were used to before due to the food situation after the war. In 1955 a Yugoslav airliner crashed immediately north of the hut (see the 1955 accident on the Leopoldsberg ), while the Josefinenhütte was used as a provisional first aid station. The international high road hill climb for motorcycles and sports cars, organized by the “Rund um Wien” motorsport club from 1955 to 1957 , started in Klosterneuburg and had the Josefinenhütte as its destination.
In 2008 it was renamed Hut am Weg by new operators . In 2009, the newspaper Die Presse commented negatively on the restructuring of the new operators from Germany.
After the hut was given a different operator in 2012, who also built the Kahlenberg forest rope park in the same year, the hut was given the double name Josefinenhütte - The hut on the way .
