Joseph Chapel

The Josefskapelle is a Roman Catholic chapel in Rustenschwil, a district of the municipality of Auw in the canton of Aargau . It was created in the mid-18th century in the late Baroque style and is a cultural asset of national importance .

history

The first mention of a chapel in Rustenschwil took place in 1644 after a donor had died. According to the date on the portal, the current building was built in 1755. The rococo style interior , consisting of a gallery and stucco vault with frescoes , dates from 1792. A new altar and new chairs were added in 1842, new altar carvings as part of the Interior renovation from 1890. Another interior renovation followed in 1926, an exterior renovation in 1965/66.

Structure and equipment

The rectangular chapel with a gable roof has two axes and a choir closed on three sides . The sacristy is located at the top, under a canopy . The porch, resting on Tuscan columns, protected the portal. This consists of a round gable and a niche with a colored wooden figure of the chapel patron Joseph of Nazareth . The corners of the chapel are framed by pilasters , a turret with an onion helmet rises above the choir.

The arched barrel vault inside, the choir arch and the monastery vault in the choir rest on a continuous, ribbon-like cornice . By Joseph Keller painted ceiling frescoes show in the ship show the marriage and rest during the flight to Egypt , in the choir preaching. Side medallions show the Auwer church patron Nikolaus von Myra , the apostles and Saint Burkard von Beinwil . There is a crucifixion group in the choir arch. The wooden altar in the choir consists of a shrine with figures of Mary , Joseph and the baby Jesus , which were created in the 17th century. The central niche figure from the mid-18th century depicts Joseph with the baby Jesus in his right arm and a shepherd's crook in his left hand. The side figures are probably works by the Zug sculptor Johann Baptist Wickart ( John the Baptist with chalice and apostle, Matthias with book and ax).
