Joseph Aloys von Hofstetten

Joseph Aloys von Hofstetten (born October 30, 1736 in Straubing , † May 19, 1797 in Munich ) was a German engineer .

Life

Hofstetten grew up in Munich and graduated from the Jesuit high school there in 1752 (today Wilhelmsgymnasium Munich ). He then completed the compulsory basic studies (= philosophy) at the adjoining lyceum and began studying law at the University of Ingolstadt in autumn 1754 . In 1757 he entered Bavarian services as a real councilor. Most recently, from 1789, he was Vice Director of the Electoral Court Chamber College in Munich , and received the honorary title of Privy Councilor . In 1792 he was appointed commissioner in the silk breeding general directorate in Bavaria. He was also electoral castner and salt official in Rosenheim .

As a civil engineer, he was in the service of Elector Karl Theodors as the Palatinate Bavarian General Construction Director for road construction , bridge construction and hydraulic engineering . Together with Adrian von Riedl, he pushed ahead with the institutionalization and professionalization of construction and surveying .

Hofstetten married Maria Barbara Freiin von Schönhub . From this marriage came the government director Johann Theodor von Hofstetten (1773-1836).

Memberships

In 1773 Hofstetten was a member no.29 of the Society for Morality and Agriculture in Baiern zu Altenötting , which he had joined on November 15, 1769. In 1777 he was master of the chair and first head of the Munich Freemason lodge Zur Cautiousness , which only existed from 1773 to 1783. At the same time he belonged like other of his lodge brothers to the secret society of the Illuminati .
