Joseph Christoph Achleitner (born January 13, 1823 in Frasdorf , Kingdom of Bavaria , † March 5, 1891 in Salzburg , Austria-Hungary ) was a zither player, composer, music teacher and conductor. He was known as the chamber virtuoso of King Otto of Greece .

Life

Family, childhood, education and time in Bavaria, 1823 to 1849

Josef Achleitner's father was the teacher and musician Ludwig Achleitner . He was the oldest of eleven siblings. Innocentius Achleitner was one of these . Joseph Achleitner received school lessons from his father. This also gave him violin and piano lessons. At the age of ten he was already doing organ service in the Umrathshausen branch church . When he was twelve he came to Pfaffenhofen to see his uncle, the teacher there. Here his musical talent was no longer encouraged and he was obliged to do heavy work, including building his uncle's house. On the contrary, the mobility of his fingers was considerably restricted by these activities, so that he could no longer pursue the violin lessons that he continued to receive in Rosenheim. Due to the intervention of his grandfather, to whom the well-being of the child was important, he came to Rosenheim in the autumn of 1836 . Here he began training as a teacher. For the third year of training he went to Kraiburg . Here his talent was best promoted. In addition to violin and violin lessons, his alto voice was trained and used in church. After half a year he was transferred to Stephanskirchen as school administrator . In November 1839, after passing the entrance exam, he entered the teacher training college in Freising . He devoted his free time to musical training. He practiced on all musical instruments that were available in the seminar. But his main instrument was the violin. He played first violin in the seminar orchestra and also appeared as a soloist. After two years of training, he left the seminary and was employed as an assistant teacher in St. Zeno . From here he was transferred to Farchant . He brought his musical skills to bear here. He gave instrumental lessons on a wide variety of instruments every day from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and was able to organize money to buy instruments. So in a few months he had the opportunity to perform church music with all the necessary instruments. This commitment also stimulated the surrounding villages. After three years he supported his sick father as an assistant teacher in Frasdorf. He then went to Rohrdorf as a school administrator and then to Aschau . In addition to his position as assistant teacher, he was appointed music master of the mountain riflemen, which, as in Farchant, he formed into a notable ensemble through acquisition of instruments and musical training. Around 1846, during an inspection of the local conditions by Duke Max Joseph in Bavaria, the latter met him and began to appreciate his musical skills. Among other things, his zither game, which he had already started in 1842 and had refined in previous years, impressed the Duke on this occasion. After three years he was transferred to Kohlgrub, where he now devoted himself more intensively to playing the zither. At an audience in Hohenschwangau, he got to know the royal family and impressed them with his zither game. They made contact with King Otto of Greece, whom he met at a festivities in Kohlgrub on September 8, 1849.

Time in the service of King Otto of Greece, 1849 to 1862

On December 13, 1849, Achleitner received an employment decree and entered the service of King Otto. He then stayed in Munich for five months . Here he received a pedal harp , the playing of which he intensified from then on. In May 1850 he left for Greece with Otto's entourage and landed in Piraeus on May 12, 1850 and Athens the following day. In addition to his work as the king's chamber musician, he devoted himself to church music, initially working as a music teacher at court and soon taking over the management of the local German school. He founded a German fire rifle association and became its chief rifleman and introduced the then modern German brass music at court. In 1853 he toured Palestine. On December 29, 1853 he married Anna Schäffner, a forester's daughter from Mainberg . Soon afterwards a son was born whose sponsorship was King Otto. A trip to Egypt followed in 1856 and to Lebanon and Syria in 1859. In the course of the military coup against Otto, he had to leave the country towards the end of October 1862.

Time in Salzburg, 1862 to 1891

Since he was only offered an assistant teacher position on his return to Bavaria, he bought an estate in Salzburg and settled there. He perfected his zither playing and gave instrumental lessons. During this time Otto visits him twice. In 1869 he received an invitation to the Great Song Festival in Baltimore . Achleitner then traveled to the United States , where he stayed for 18 days. During the trip he met Amalie von Oldenburg who had stayed in Oldenburg. After his return he continued to give music lessons, but stopped doing so after a few years. He then lived in Salzburg until his death.
